Beijing stuns Guangdong again to grab a 2-0 lead
DEFENDING champions Guangdong Southern Tigers found another way to lose, this time failing to hold on to a 10-point lead after a fourth-quarter collapse that gave the Beijing Ducks a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven CBA finals in Guangdong yesterday.
Beijing edged the seven-time champions 109-106 to seize the initiative.
Despite falling behind by the end of fourth quarter, the Tigers still had a chance to tie the game. Point guard Aaron Brooks had a turnover that sealed the win for the visitors.
Beijing's center Randolph Morris led the Ducks with game-high 33 points and 12 rebounds.
Stephon Marbury scored 23 points and had nine assists during his 24 minutes on the court.
"We did not give up," said Beijing player Chen Lei. "We count on our defense."
"Marbury helped us make the breakthrough at the last quarter."
The Ducks outscored the Tigers in the fourth quarter, 32-19, thanks in large part to Marbury.
No team has managed to come back and win the championships after going down 0-2 in the finals in the league's 17 years history. Game 3 of the series will be played in Guangdong on Sunday.
Earlier, the Chinese Basketball Association warned Guangdong head coach Li Chunjiang and player Zhou Peng for their behavior in Game 1 in Beijing that riled the fans.
Zhou pushed Marbury to the ground as the American attempted a shoot, a flagrant fault that almost brought the game to a halt.
Beijing was also fined 110,000 yuan (about US$17,406) - the most severe penalty this season - for their fans behavior after the game.
