Bryant out indefinitely with sprained left ankle
KOBE Bryant severely sprained his left ankle in the last minute of Wednesday night's 92-96 away loss to the Atlanta Hawks and is out indefinitely, the Los Angeles Lakers announced.
Bryant tried to tie the game on a baseline jumper in the final seconds when he collided with Dahntay Jones and came down on his foot.
The 15-time National Basketball Association all-star missed the shot and dropped to the court in pain. He eventually got up and walked off under his own power.
X-rays proved negative but he was expected to be re-examined by team doctors.
Bryant shot 11-of-33 from the field against the Hawks and finished with 31 points on the night.
After the game, Bryant blasted Jones, saying that it was one of his signature shots and under normal circumstances he would never injure himself. "It is a shot I am very comfortable taking," Bryant insisted. "You can't walk underneath shooters, man. That is a very dangerous play.ó
Bryant also went on Twitter to express his anger at Jones and the referees for not calling a foul on the play.
ò#dangerousplay that should have been called. Period,ó Bryant tweeted.
Jones shot back via his Twitter account: òTape doesn?t lie. Ankle was turned on the floor after the leg kick out that knocked him off balance. I would never try to hurt the man.ó
The 31-year-old Bryant has carried the Lakers on his back for most of this season and is one of the top scorers in the NBA with a 27.5 per game average.
The loss in Atlanta, Georgia, ended a four-game winning streak and was just Los Angeles? third loss in the last 12 games.
