Bull's eye: Heat streak ends at 27

THE Miami Heat's bid for National Basketball Association history ended on Wednesday when their 27-game winning streak was halted by the Bulls 97-101 at a raucous United Center in Chicago.

Miami finished six short of the 33-game record held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

LeBron James said there was no shame in falling short. "It's one of the best that this league has ever seen," James said, referring to the streak that began on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3. "We recognized that and rightfully so."

James tried to spur yet another comeback in the final minutes, getting mad after a rough foul. But the reigning Most Valuable Player could never get the defending champions even or ahead.

Luol Deng scored 28 points, Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 17 rebounds, and the Bulls brought the Heat's stampede to a screeching halt.

Miami's superstar did all he could to keep the run going, scoring 32 points and even collecting a flagrant foul during a physical final few minutes.

Miami hadn't lost since the Pacers beat the Heat in Indianapolis on February 1.

James's usual role as a facilitator was limited. He had only three assists and became clearly frustrated by the Bulls' physical approach to defending him. That included a two-handed take-down by Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich in the first quarter, and a rough grab by Taj Gibson in the fourth that was reviewed and ruled a common rather than flagrant foul. So, seconds later, James tried to barrel through Boozer on a screen, and got called for a Flagrant 1 himself.

"Those are not basketball plays," James said, but the Bulls were unrepentant.

"We just had that edge about us tonight," Hinrich said.
