Bulls see off pesky Pistons
DERRICK Rose scored 13 of his 27 points in the first quarter and had a key assist in the final minute to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 101-96 win over the pesky Detroit Pistons in the NBA yesterday.
The Eastern Conference-leading Bulls enjoyed a comfortable lead for much of the game but the lowly Pistons pulled within three a couple of times late in the final period.
Rose made a perfect pass to set up Ronnie Brewer's layup for a six-point lead with 34 seconds left and the MVP candidate made two free throws with 5.8 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Chicago's Carlos Boozer had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Richard Hamilton scored 30 for the Pistons.
Magic 89, Bobcats 77
In Orlando, Dwight Howard had 26 points and 14 rebounds to power Orlando to victory over Charlotte.
Jameer Nelson chipped in 15 points and six assists for the Magic, who have won 13 of the past 15 against the Bobcats.
Charlotte lost further ground in its effort to close the gap on Indiana for a playoff spot with just seven games to play.
Dante Cunningham led Charlotte with 21 points.
Heat 111, Timberwolves 92
In Minneapolis, Miami turned a tight game with Minnesota into a rout with a third-quarter surge.
Dwyane Wade scored 32 points and LeBron James added 27 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for the Heat, who trailed at halftime but opened the third quarter with a staggering 25-1 run to take control.
Miami reduced its magic number to clinch the Southeast Division to one, with Orlando's victory over Charlotte preventing the Heat from wrapping it up.
Kevin Love had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost nine games in a row.
Pacers 89, Bucks 88
In Indianapolis, Indiana solidified its playoff prospects while pushing Milwaukee to the brink of elimination.
Danny Granger scored 17 points while Roy Hibbert had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Pacers, who moved two games clear of Charlotte and four ahead of Milwaukee with five to play.
The Bucks trailed the entire second half but could have won in the closing seconds, when Drew Gooden missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Brandon Jennings had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Bucks.
76ers 115, Nets 90
In Philadelphia, the hosts clinched a playoff spot with an easy win over New Jersey.
Thaddeus Young scored 22 points and Elton Brand had 21 as the Sixers returned to the postseason after missing out last year. The Sixers won just 27 games last season and a long rebuilding process loomed. However, under coach Doug Collins, the Sixers have gone 37-23 since a 3-13 start and can finish with a winning record for the first time since 2004-05.
Brandan Wright had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets.
Wizards 115, Cavaliers 107
In Washington, Andray Blatche tied a career high with 36 points and had a career-best 19 rebounds as undermanned Washington defeated Cleveland.
Jordan Crawford added 21 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who were without John Wall, who was suspended for one game due to his part in a scuffle earlier this week.
Blatche's outstanding performance came in his second game back after missing 10 with a sprained right shoulder. He keyed a 14-0 run early in the third quarter that gave Washington a 68-61 lead.
Blatche set a franchise record with 16 offensive rebounds.
