Cagers fall to Greece in opener

GUARD Nikos Zisis and center Ioannis Bourousis scored 21 points each yesterday to lead Greece to an 89-81 win over China in the opening game at the world championship in Ankara, Turkey.

Greece led 25-18 after the first quarter and 47-37 at halftime. That advantage was cut to 65-62 after the third quarter, but Greece scored 24 points in the last quarter.

Washington Wizards power forward Yi Jianlian scored 26 points in a China team missing Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming, who has undergone foot surgery.

Greece's Antonis Fotsis and Sofoklis Schortsanitis were suspended from a brawl in an exhibition game against Serbia last week.

Greece takes on Puerto Rico and China faces Ivory Coast today. Turkey and Russia are also in Group C.

In other games yesterday, it was: Australia 76, Jordan 75; Slovenia 80, Tunisia 56; and Lithuania 92, New Zealand 79.

Basketball's governing body earlier rejected Greece's appeal against the two players' suspensions.

Patrick Baumann, FIBA's secretary general, said the punishment given to Fotsis and Schortsanitis will stand, and the players will miss the first two games of the world championship.

Baumann added that Serbia chose not to appeal the suspensions given to Nenad Krstic and Milos Teodosic. Krstic received the harshest penalty, a three-game ban, after throwing a chair in the August 19 brawl near the end of a game in Athens.

Baumann said players representing their national teams have an "added obligation to behave properly."
