Cavs debut newly-signed Williams in Bucks win

THE Cleveland Cavaliers signed free agent Deron Williams on Monday then debuted their new guard in a 102-95 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Williams, a three-time All Star, was waived by the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday and cleared waivers on Saturday, making him a free agent.

The Cavaliers signed Williams to the veteran minimum salary for the rest of this season, giving the Cavaliers a veteran backup point guard for All-Star Kyrie Irving.

He appeared in the team’s victory over the Bucks on Monday, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

The 32-year-old played 40 games, all as a starter, for the Mavericks this season. He averaged 13.1 points, 6.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 29.3 minutes.

LeBron James had stated that the Eastern Conference-leading Cavaliers (41-17) needed to add another playmaker in order to defend their title and he appears to have got his wish. “He can knock down shots and he can play make,” James said of his new teammate.

“He’s played in big games before so you know he won’t shy away from the moment. It’s going to help us out a lot.”

Williams is an Olympian teammate of James with the United States team but has never made it to the NBA finals,

And his signing may not be the last for Cleveland, which has expressed interest in center Andrew Bogut, who was waived by Philadelphia.

The 76ers acquired Bogut last Thursday in a deal with the Mavericks to capture Nerlens Noel in exchange for the Australian, Justin Anderson and a 2017 first-round draft pick.

Williams played with Bogut and smiled when asked if he had any pull in getting the big man to the Cavaliers. “We’ve been in contact,” he said.

The 32-year-old Bogut, who was the first Australian to be the overall first pick in the 2005 NBA draft, is averaging 3.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 22.4 minutes per game this season.

Elsewhere on Monday, it was: Warriors 119, 76ers 108; Raptors 92, Knicks 91; Hawks 114, Celtics 98; Mavericks 96, Heat 89; Pacers 117, Rockets 108; and Timberwolves 102, Kings 88.
