Celtics' Allen to sign for Heat
RAY Allen told the Miami Heat on Friday night that he intends to accept their contract offer and leave Boston after five seasons despite having to take a significant pay cut.
The Celtics could pay him about twice as much as the reigning National Basketball Association champions will be able to next season. Miami could only offer Allen the mini mid-level, worth about US$3 million for next season.
Allen arrived in Miami on Thursday for a visit, and late on Friday, team president Micky Arison announced on Twitter that Allen had agreed to the deal.
Allen cannot officially sign until Wednesday because of the league's moratorium.
Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James confirmed Allen would be joining him in Florida shortly after.
"HeatNation please welcome our newest teammate Ray Allen. Wow," the eight-time NBA All-Star tweeted.
The deal is a huge coup for Miami and the 36-year-old Allen will link up with the Heat's 'Big Three' of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
Allen is the NBA's all-time leading three-point scorer and a 10-time All-Star and won the NBA title with Boston in 2008.
In June of last year, he exercised his contract option to remain with Boston, keeping intact the team's 'Big Three' unit of Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
