Celtics fight back to down Pacers

THE Boston Celtics came from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to run down the Indiana Pacers and win 103-94 yesterday, boosting their lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

Paul Pierce missed his first 10 shots but then scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, including seven straight, to put Boston ahead for good.

Pierce finished with 21 points, going 12 for 13 from the free throw line to make up for his slow start from the floor. Kendrick Perkins scored 19 points to go with eight rebounds.

Indiana's Troy Murphy had 24 points and a season-high 18 rebounds but the Pacers gave up a 15-point halftime lead to fall to a fourth straight loss.

The Celtics scored 13 straight points to take their first lead with 4:45 left in the third quarter.

Hawks 112, Timberwolves 87

In Minneapolis, Jamal Crawford scored 26 points and Joe Johnson added 21 points and six assists to lead Atlanta past Minnesota.

The Hawks moved to 20-7, equalling the best start in franchise history. They are 5-0 against teams from the Northwest Division.

Minnesota's Kevin Love had 15 points and matched a career high with 19 rebounds.

Bobcats 88, Pistons 76

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Gerald Wallace had 29 points and 12 rebounds in his return after missing a game with severe headaches, leading Charlotte over undermanned Detroit.

Stephen Jackson added 13 points despite playing with a sore back for the sharp-shooting Bobcats, who held a comfortable lead over the final three quarters and ended a run of three straight losses.

The Pistons lost their fifth straight as they again had Richard Hamilton (hamstring), Tayshaun Prince (back) and Ben Gordon (ankle) sidelined.

Knicks 88, Bulls 81

In New York, David Lee rattled in the clinching jumper with 5.5 seconds left as New York held on to beat Chicago.

Lee finished with 18 points and a career high-tying 21 rebounds.

One night after blowing a 35-point third-quarter lead in a home loss to Sacramento, the Bulls nearly battled back from a huge deficit in this one but New York prevailed for its third straight victory.

Derrick Rose scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half for the Bulls, who whittled a 22-point deficit to one in the final 2 minutes but couldn't get level.

Al Harrington led the Knicks with 20 points as the hosts clinched their first winning record in December since 2004-05.

Grizzlies 121, Warriors 108

In Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis withstood a strong start by Golden State to beat the slumping Warriors.

Zach Randolph scored a season-high 33 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, while Marc Gasol and O.J. Mayo added 22 points apiece as the Grizzlies won their third straight.

Corey Maggette had 25 points to lead the Warriors, who shot 85 percent in the first quarter but lost their sixth straight.

Wizards 105, 76ers 98

In Washington, Gilbert Arenas was brilliant at the beginning and end, and quiet in between, leading Washington over Philadelphia.

Arenas scored the game's first seven points and finished the opening quarter with 15. After adding only two points in each of the next two periods, he came out of his shell in the fourth, scoring 12 to finish with 31 points, eight rebounds but only two assists.

During a key 16-6 run in the fourth quarter that put Washington ahead for good, Arenas and Caron Butler combined to score every point for the Wizards.

Elton Brand led Philadelphia with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
