Celtics hoping to seal Shaq deal

THE Boston Celtics are making progress on a deal that would bring Shaquille O'Neal to the defending Eastern Conference champions, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet final.

Earlier on Tuesday, O'Neal said he will be in the league next season and would rather retire than play internationally.

The 38-year-old O'Neal spent last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He won three National Basketball Association titles with the Los Angeles Lakers and another with the Miami Heat.

But he has struggled to find a contract from a team that can guarantee him playing time, enough money and a chance for one more championship to add to his legacy.

He all but ruled out joining LeBron James in Miami or a return to the Orlando Magic, where he began his career in 1992, with both teams not showing much interest. He also admitted this offseason has been particularly difficult floating around in free agency.

Interestingly, the Heat will debut their All-Star trio of James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh at Boston on the opening night of the NBA season against the defending Eastern Conference champion Celtics, who are led by their veteran group of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

The Lakers will host Houston in the other opener on October 26, the NBA announced on Tuesday. The Rockets hope to have Yao Ming back in the lineup after he missed last season with a foot injury.

The Christmas schedule will again feature five games, highlighted by the return of the Heat-Lakers matchup that was regularly played on December 25 after Los Angeles traded O'Neal to Miami in 2004.

Rematch of the East

Boston will visit Orlando at Christmas for a rematch of the East finals. The remainder of that day's schedule includes Chicago at New York, Denver at Oklahoma City, and Portland at Golden State.

The full NBA schedule will be released on August 10, but the league unveiled its nationally televised games for the opening week of the season, Christmas and Martin Luther King Jr Days during an NBA TV special on Tuesday.

There was more heightened interest in the schedule this season because of the attention on the Heat, who got James and Bosh to join Wade last month. James' return to Cleveland, surely to be a spectacle because of Cavaliers fans' anger over the Ohio native's departure, did not land on one of the marquee dates.
