China embarrasses Malaysia by 91 points

Defending champion China whitewashed Malaysia 113-22 in yesterday’s second preliminary round match at the Asia Championship in Manila, Philippines, booking a place in the second round of the 15-team tournament.

Wang Zhelin scored a team-high 21 points and added 8 rebounds. Wang Zhizhi contributed 17 points while Yi Jianlian sat out and watched the game from the bench.

Shanghai Sharks captain Liu Wei missed the game due to a foot injury.
It was Malaysia’s second defeat by at least 90 points after losing 115-25 to Iran on Thursday.

China lost its opening game of the tournament 63-59 to South Korea, and faces Iran in today’s final Group C match.

Malaysia’s preparations for the tournament were thrown in disarray after 25-year-old center Jack Ng Kiat Kee collapsed on the bench during a warm-up game last Sunday. He reportedly died of heart failure two hours later.

Malaysia’s squad features several amateur players.
The tournament runs from August 1 to 11 and serves as a qualifier for next year’s World Cup in Spain.
