China finally grabs a win in Stankovic
CHINA finally savored its first victory at the ongoing Stankovic Cup, beating Angola 64-54 in the Guangzhou leg on Tuesday to finish in the third place.
After losing seven games in a row, China was desperate to grab a victory in its last match.
The hosts led all the way with 6-0 and 9-0 runs in the first half, and stretching its lead up to 20 points. But they battled five minutes without scoring a point at the start of the fourth quarter as the African side reduced the deficit to eight points.
But then, Yi Jianlian made a crucial block and Zhang Qingpeng stole the ball for an easy layup to stretch the cushion to 11 points with only 50 seconds left for the buzzer.
"I believe the Chinese coach did a hard job in training their defense. Their tactics in defense have dramatically improved tonight," said Angola's coach Gomez said.
Gomez said China's NBA player Yi Jianlian posed the greatest threat to Angola, saying his shooting was as sharp as a razor's edge.
Yi led the team with 22 points, while Zhang Bo and Zhang Qingpeng combined for 21.
"Yi returned (from injury), many of our guys could get back to their normal positions, so our attacking tonight seemed more normal and fluent than before," said Robert Donewald, coach of the Chinese team.
Donewald rued the injuries in the team.
"We won, you believe it is good. But I don't think so, there are more injuries in our team."
"Eight games in nine days," Donewald said, shaking his head. "So I must choose to lose some games to protect the team."
"Anyhow, I will make you proud in September at the Asian Championship, and that is my job," he said.
The Asian Championship will be held in Wuhan with the winner qualifying for the London Olympics directly.
