China hopes dim after Russia loss

SERGEY Monya scored 17 points and Sasha Kaun added 16 to lead Russia over China 89-80 yesterday and into the second round of the world championship in Turkey.

The victory, the second in as many days, left Russia with seven points in Group C. For China, it was the team's second loss in a row after falling to Puerto Rico 76-84 on Tuesday.

The Chinese struggled throughout yesterday's game and tied it at 58-58 at 3:17 of the third quarter and 73-73 with five minutes to go in the last quarter.

But Russia bounced back in the final minutes as Kaun scored to make it 87-75 with 1:53 to go.

China guard Sun Yue scored 19 points and Wang Shipeng added 16 yesterday.

On Tuesday, Puerto Rico earned its first win at the world championship by beating China, using its strong transition game to overcome the big Chinese.

Angelo Vassalo scored 22 points and Denver Nuggets forward Renaldo Balkman had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for Puerto Rico.

Nathan Peavy and Jose Barea added 13 points each as Puerto Rico (1-2) bounced back from losses to Greece and Russia in previous Group C games over the weekend.

China (1-2) relied heavily on 7-footers Yi Jianlian and Wang Zhizhi to stay in the game, as the duo scored 20 of the team's 21 first-quarter points. But the quicker Puerto Ricans countered with fast breaks, repeatedly beating their opponents in transition to take a 44-37 halftime lead.

China pulled within three points in the fourth quarter, but Puerto Rico again answered with a couple of fast breaks to make it 77-69 and China never looked likely to fight back.

Yi finished with 24 points, while Wang had 17.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, hosts Turkey stayed perfect by beating traditional rival and neighbor Greece 76-65, while defending champion Spain was anything but in a 73-76 defeat to Lithuania for its second loss.

Ersan Ilyasova of the Milwaukee Bucks led Turkey with 26 points and the host team pulled away thanks to a 26-10 third quarter after leading by two at halftime.

Spain wasted an 18-point lead before Linas Kleiza scored four points in the last 35 seconds to clinch the win for Lithuania.

Spain is the reigning European champion and the Olympic silver medalist and has been one of the most dominant teams in the past few years. But it has been missing center Pau Gasol the Los Angeles Lakers and guard Jose Manuel Calderon and has lost two of its three games.

Lithuania is a traditional basketball power but has been struggling in recent years and needed a FIBA wildcard to make the tournament. But it is now 3-0 and is essentially sure of reaching the single-elimination second round as one of the top four teams in its group.

Spain (1-2) looks like it will make it too since its last two group rivals are Lebanon and Canada, with one win between them so far.
