Donewald takes up China job
AMERICAN Bob Donewald Jr accepted one of the toughest jobs in Chinese sport yesterday when he was named head coach of the national basketball team in the hoops-crazy nation.
The former assistant coach of New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers in the National Basketball Association led the Shanghai Sharks to the final four of the domestic Chinese Basketball Association league in his first season after being hired by club owner and NBA All-Star Yao Ming.
"There will be setbacks and difficulties but I believe I can overcome them," he told a news conference in Beijing. "I am excited."
Donewald's predecessor Guo Shiqiang, pilloried after a humiliating defeat at the Asian championships last August, will be retained as an assistant coach.
Guo will be able to tell Donewald all about the huge weight of expectation he will be under as he prepares China for August's world championships in Turkey and the defense of the Asian Games title on home soil in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, in November.
Donewald, who will be without Yao for both campaigns, will get a three-year contract if China does well at those events and will also still oversee the Sharks.
"Yao Ming is one of the greatest players in the world. And with his injury, it is going to make things difficult," Donewald said.
He is the third foreign coach of the China team, following compatriot Del Harris and Lithuanian Jonas Kazlauskas.
