Dongguan outplays Shanghai in fourth to stretch run
THE Dongguan Leopards stifled the Sharks' two American players as the home side folded in the fourth quarter to lose 91-100 in their Chinese Basketball Association league match in Shanghai yesterday.
Dongguan's Marcus Haislip notched a game-high 27 points and rallied the visitors with a strong comeback in the fourth. It was the Leopards fourth straight win.
For Shanghai, skipper Liu Wei contributed with 23 points and eight assists.
Americans Gilbert Arenas managed 15 points and 14 rebounds while D.J. White could only muster 11 points.
"They (Dongguan) had many easy scores and our defence was lax," Wang Qun, Shanghai's interim head coach, said after the game.
"During offense, several shots were aimed without much consideration."
The Sharks led 79-77 at the end of the third quarter. But Shanghai could only manage 12 points in the fourth while the opposition had 25.
Zhang Zhaoxu, the Sharks' center who missed the last game, returned strong, scoring 18 points with several beautiful dunks and 12 rebounds, but was also troubled by fouls.
He had five fouls last night.
"We will have more player shifts in the future and try and win as many games as possible," Wang said.
The coach said earlier that more local players will see action as they prepare for the National Games this year.
Shanghai will play the seven-time CBA winners Guangdong Southern Tigers at home tomorrow.
The Sharks are 16th in the 17-team league.
Dongguan is 7th.
Elsewhere in the CBA yesterday, Guangdong continues to sit on top of the table after beating the Bayi Rockets 92-82 to snare its 12 straight win.
Also, the Shandong Gold picked up their 10 straight win after beating Xinjiang Flying Tigers 96-93.
