Fake injury earns Arenas a team fine
WASHINGTON Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has been fined an undisclosed amount by his team after making himself unavailable with a fake injury for a preseason game.
The three-time All-Star claimed to be hampered by a knee injury and was replaced by Nick Young for Tuesday's home game against the Atlanta Hawks, which the Wizards won 107-92.
However, Arenas later told reporters he had pretended to be injured so that Young would gain a spot in the starting lineup.
"I talked to him (Arenas) both in front of the team and individually so we will fine him and move on," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said.
"I said to him: 'I am most disappointed personally because I believe in you and there has been a trust factor'. I told him: 'You have to be honest with me'. It's just like dealing with your kids. Your kids make mistakes. You deal with the mistake and you move on."
Sanders said Arenas will not be suspended.
A nine-year NBA veteran, Arenas had been expected to play his first home game on Tuesday since being suspended for most of the 2009-10 campaign for bringing guns into the team's locker room.
Meanwhile, the Miami Heat did not play LeBron James against the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday, saying his right hamstring remained tight from an exhibition game a night earlier.
The Heat initially said James was cramping when he left Tuesday night against Russian team CSKA Moscow and that he was not expected to play in New Orleans.
With James sidelined, fans who showed up at the New Orleans Arena were unable to see two of Miami's biggest stars. Dwyane Wade has been out since straining his right hamstring in the Heat's first preseason game.
