Foshan rallies to stun Sharks
A NAIL-BITING third round game between Foshan Dralions and Shanghai Sharks ended in a 102-96 victory for the Dralions, thanks to an electrifying performance from Gerald Green.
The former Boston Celtics forward scored 41 points, including eight three-pointers, as he helped his side keep up with the Sharks who showed flashes of real class but ultimately couldn't control the game's star player, who conspired to snatch victory from its grasp.
The opening quarters were tense, with neither side ever looking like they were going to exert control over the game.
Despite gritty, physical defence from both sides, the score board ticked along constantly as clever movement off-the-ball and clinical shooting kept the game close.
Green and Shanghai's talismanic point guard, Liu Wei, were at the forefront of the high stakes shoot-out, consisting of making clutch shots when it looked like one team was going to claim the momentum.
The sides went in at half time winning 55-51 but the game remained extremely close.
A buzzer-beater from the Sharks' Ryan Kelly at the end of the third quarter had given Shanghai a narrow 79-78 advantage as they entered the fourth quarter and the away side patiently began to increase the deficit as the minutes ticked away.
Yet Foshan would not lie down and the indefatigable Green's pinpoint shooting gradually got his side back into the game.
Thunderous dunk
With three minutes left, a thunderous dunk from the American brought the home crowd to its feet as Foshan found the energy it needed to bring the scores level.
Another three-pointer from distance by Green put his side in the lead and Shanghai was on the ropes. Sharks coach Daniel Panaggio called a time-out to snap his team out of its trance but it was too late.
A lead that the Sharks had held until the final few minutes had been wasted and Foshan closed the game out to win 102-96 and condemn the visitors to a third successive defeat.
Elsewhere in the CBA yesterday, Xinjiang Flying Tigers beat visiting Bayi Rockets 111-92. Guangdong Southern Tigers were shocked 92-104 by Beijing Ducks, with Guangdong's star center Yi Jianlian limping out in the second quarter.
