Fury over Ball鈥檚 comment about Lakers鈥 coach

Flamboyant basketball dad LaVar Ball鈥檚 claim that Luke Walton, coach of the struggling Los Angeles Lakers, has lost the confidence of his players created a stir across the NBA on Sunday.
Ball, father of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, made the comments to ESPN from Lithuania, where younger sons LiAngelo and LaMelo have signed to play with Vytautas in the small southern town of Prienai.
Lonzo Ball was asked on Sunday at the Lakers鈥 shootaround if he likes playing for Walton. 鈥淚鈥檒l play for anybody,鈥 Ball answered, according to the Los Angeles Times. 鈥淢y job is to play basketball,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 decide who coaches.鈥
There was no immediate comment on the affair from Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, but Walton said he had spoken to club executives.
鈥淚 feel very secure in my job status right now,鈥 Walton said. 鈥淲e talk all the time. They鈥檙e 100 percent behind and supporting what we鈥檙e doing.鈥
The Lakers went into Sunday鈥檚 game against the Atlanta Hawks on a nine-game losing streak. The Lakers swiped 13 steals and scored 26 points off turnovers en route to a 132-113 victory.
The young team鈥檚 struggles has prompted plenty of comment from the outspoken LaVar Ball, who has criticized Walton鈥檚 handling of his son. Walton said the comments didn鈥檛 concern him, as long as they didn鈥檛 adversely affect his player.
But LaVar Ball鈥檚 latest remarks caught the eye of Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle, the head of the NBA Coaches Association who scolded ESPN for giving Ball a platform.
Carlisle called the ESPN article 鈥渁 disgrace.鈥 鈥淟uke Walton is a terrific young coach bringing along a young team,鈥 Carlisle said, adding that ESPN, which he characterized as a television partner of the league, 鈥渟hould back up the coaches.鈥
