George fires Pacers past Lakers
Indiana’s Paul George scored 20 points while contributing seven rebounds and six assists to spark the NBA-leading Pacers over the Los Angeles Lakers 118-98 on Tuesday.
The Pacers improved to 43-13, staying just ahead of Oklahoma City (43-14) for the league’s best record, while the Lakers fell to 19-38, the worst mark in the Western Conference.
Evan Turner, making his Indiana debut after being obtained from Philadelphia at the National Basketball Association trade deadline, came off the bench to score 13 for the Pacers while Lance Stephenson added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Kent Bazemore scored a career-best 23 points in a losing cause as the Lakers lost for the sixth time in seven games.
The Pacers swept the two-game season series with the Lakers for the first time since the 1991-92 campaign.
Pau Gasol’s jumper pulled the Lakers within 59-58 early in the third quarter but the Pacers followed with a 12-1 run.
George netted 12 of his 20 points in the period and Indiana’s 17-4 run to conclude the third quarter stretched the Pacers lead to 91-70.
Elsewhere in the NBA, it was: Rockets 129, Kings 103; Wizards 115, Magic 106; Raptors 99, Cavaliers 93; Bulls 107, Hawks 103; Timberwolves 110, Suns 101; and Trail Blazers 100, Nuggets 95.
In Sacramento, California, James Harden needed only three quarters to score a season-high 43 points and lead the Rockets to victory over the Kings.
Harden was able to sit out all of the last quarter as the Rockets moved within 1-1/2 games of the San Antonio Spurs for the Southwest Division lead.
Harden helped Houston go ahead by 25 points in the first quarter, 31 in the second and 33 in the third. He shot 11 of 20 from the floor and added eight assists.
Dwight Howard left briefly after banging his right knee but returned to finish with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Rockets, who have won 10 of 11 games.
DeMarcus Cousins had 16 points and six rebounds for the Kings before getting ejected for vehemently arguing with an official in the third quarter.
