Ginobili shines as Spurs trash Celtics
MANU Ginobili scored 28 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 94-73 victory over the sluggish Boston Celtics on Sunday.
Ginobili continued to provide the Spurs a scoring boost in the absence of Tony Parker and also added seven assists as San Antonio won for the third time in four games. They also beat Eastern Conference leaders Cleveland on Friday.
"Manu's been playing great for the last month. He's basically taken over the team," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Without Tony (Parker) it's really important for someone to step up like that."
Parker has missed the last 12 games with a broken hand and the team has also overcome fading production from All Star center Tim Duncan, who has scored more than 20 points just twice in the past month. Duncan scored eight points against Boston.
The Spurs led 44-43 at halftime but outscored the Celtics 33-17 in the third quarter, with Richard Jefferson, who shook off early foul trouble, scoring nine of his 16 points in the period.
"I was sick in the first quarter watching the team," Jefferson said. "When I came back I wanted to put my imprint on the game and help them out."
In other games, it was: Magic 103, Nuggets 97; Cavaliers 97, Kings 90; Bucks 108, Grizzlies 103; Hawks 94, Pacers 84; Heat 97, Raptors 94; Bulls 110, Pistons 103; Suns 111, Timberwolves 105; Trail Blazers 92, Thunder 87; and Warriors 121, Clippers 103.
In Orlando, Florida, J J Redick had 23 points and career highs of eight assists and seven rebounds in place of an injured Vince Carter as he helped the Orlando Magic beat the Denver Nuggets 103-97.
Redick played a career-high 46 minutes after Carter injured his right big toe.
In Cleveland, LeBron James scored 23 of his 34 points in the second half and Antawn Jamison added 26 as the Cavs welcomed back center Zydrunas Ilgauskas with a victory over Sacramento.
In Miami, Dwyane Wade scored 32 points as the Heat rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat Toronto.
Miami outscored Toronto 19-7 in the final 6:12, taking the lead for good at 91-89 on Carlos Arroyo's jumper with 59 seconds remaining. Arroyo converted eight free throws in the final 22 seconds and Udonis Haslem scored 11 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Heat, in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
In Minneapolis, Amare Stoudemire had 30 points and 17 rebounds, helping Phoenix beat Minnesota, which matched a club record with its 16th loss in a row.
Kevin Love had 23 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, and Al Jefferson put up 19 points and 16 rebounds, leading the Timberwolves on a startling second-half comeback after falling behind by 25 points in the second quarter.
