Griffin’s big night lifts Clippers past Blazers

In a game featuring 40 lead changes, the Los Angeles Clippers edged Portland 122-117 on Wednesday to narrow the gap between the two Western Conference contenders to five games.

Among the day’s other key results, Eastern Conference leader Indiana suffered only it third home loss of the season when beaten by Dallas, LeBron James capped a superb individual performance by sinking a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that gave Miami victory at Golden State, and Houston also got a last-second winner to beat Washington.

Los Angeles was led to victory by 36 points from Blake Griffin while Chris Paul had 20 points and 12 assists in his second game back from a shoulder injury.

The Pacific Division-leading Clippers converted 16 Portland turnovers into 20 points.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points for Portland, which slipped 5-1/2 games behind leader Oklahoma City in the Northwest Division.

Dallas’ Monta Ellis had 23 points and nine rebounds as the Mavericks put in an impressive defensive performance to win 81-73 at Indiana.

Dirk Nowitzki added 18 points for the Mavericks, who have won six of seven heading into the break.

George Hill’s 14 points was the mediocre leading tally for the Pacers, who gave up the first six points of the fourth quarter and were not able to bridge the gap.

Miami’s LeBron James capped one of his best games in dramatic fashion, making a step-back 3-pointer with less than a second remaining to give the Heat a 111-110 win at Golden State.

“I was going for the win the whole time,” James said.

With Dwyane Wade out with a foot injury, James shouldered the load for the two-time defending NBA champions, finishing with 36 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.

“We witnessed greatness,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said of James’ game-winning shot. “A special player, an all-time great, made a big-time shot.”

Elsewhere, it was: Rockets 113, Wizards 112; Spurs 104, Celtics 92; Raptors 104, Hawks 83; Timberwolves 117, Nuggets 90; Nets 105, Bobcats 89; and Grizzlies 86, Magic 81.
