Guangdong edges closer to final
GUANGDONG Hongyuan is just a game away from advancing to the CBA finals after edging the Shanghai Sharks 96-94 in Shanghai yesterday.
Guangdong now leads the best-of-five semifinals 2-1. The five-time CBA champion has never lost from such a position before.
The fourth match of the series will be played at Shanghai's Yuanshen Stadium on Sunday.
Guangdong's William "Smush" Parker scored 32 points with seven rebounds last night and beat the buzzer for the winning shot after missing two free throws.
"It's a shame we didn't come up with the rebound but even if we had, the game was lost with 32 turnovers," said the Sharks coach Robert Donewald for the high number of turnovers.
"We made some bad decisions on our passing," Donewald said.
"And I don't think out screening was very good and I don't think our decision making was very good.
"You're not going to beat the champions turning the ball over like that."
Sharks captain Liu Wei, who had to be substituted after the sixth foul in the fourth quarter, could only muster 8 points and 9 assists but also had 8 turnovers.
"I was paying more attention on the defense as per the coach's instructions, which was a bit taxing," Liu said.
"I will play harder in the next match."
The referees were booed for much of the game by the 5,000-odd home fans after they fouled out Sharks three players -- Liu, center Garret Siler, who had 9 points and 6 rebounds, and forward Zaid Abbas, who managed 17 points and 15 rebounds.
They hit the roof when Abbas was called for a foul in the fourth quarter by the assistant referee in the dying moments with the game tied at 94-94.
Parker then grabbed the winner from a rebound after missing two free throws.
"The series isn't over yet. I think we can go further," Liu insisted.
