Hawks cool Heat to seal playoff spot, Mavs also in

THE Atlanta Hawks clinched the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday as Jeff Teague scored 25 points in a 98-85 win over the defending champions Miami Heat.

Lou Williams scored 23 points for Atlanta which claimed the final playoff berth in the East.

Atlanta had a 25-21 record on February 4 but went into a 6-20 tailspin before winning six of its last eight National Basketball Association games. “It’s satisfying to get a win and be in a groove that we’re in,” Williams said.

The Hawks qualified for the postseason for a seventh straight season. They scored 29 points off 20 Miami turnovers.

Dwyane Wade scored 16 first-half points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting. He finished with 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting for the Heat, who are tied with the Indiana Pacers for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James posted 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists in defeat.

Also, Dallas booked its place in the playoffs with a 101-98 come-from-behind win over Phoenix, with Monta Ellis matching his season high of 37 points.

Dallas’ Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki — who scored 21 of his 23 points in the second-half rally — brought the Mavericks back by hitting five 3-pointers between them in less than 4 minutes of the third quarter, erasing most of a 13-point deficit. Then, they teamed to get the lead back in the fourth, and the hosts held on in the final minutes.

The Mavericks left the Suns and Memphis to battle for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Dallas is back in the postseason after a 12-year playoff streak ended last season.
