Hawks hire Budenholzer, Suns go with Hornacek

THE Atlanta Hawks have hired San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer to become the team's new head coach, the National Basketball Association club announced on Tuesday.

Budenholzer, who was part of San Antonio's run of four NBA titles between 1999 and 2007, served as an assistant under head coach Gregg Popovich for the last six years.

The 43-year-old American has spent 17 of the previous 19 seasons as an assistant with the Spurs.

Budenholzer takes over from Larry Drew who guided Atlanta to a 44-38 record and first-round playoff defeat to the Indiana Pacers. Drew told the Hawks he was leaving to seek another coaching job.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns hired former all-star player Jeff Hornacek as their new head coach on Tuesday.

Hornacek played 468 games with the Suns from 1986-1992.

He returns from the Utah Jazz where he served as the shooting coach before being promoted to assistant coach.
