Heat cool Hawks for 4th straight
Chris Bosh scored 19 points and Ray Allen added 17 to spark the Miami Heat over the visiting Atlanta Hawks 104-88 on Tuesday, giving the reigning National Basketball Association champions their fourth win in a row.
Despite star guard Dwyane Wade sitting out the contest as a precaution due to worries over knee injuries, the Heat managed to defeat the Hawks for an eighth consecutive meeting between the clubs.
Mario Chalmers added 14 points, including nine in a row during a pivotal 23-6 Miami run in the third quarter to give the hosts the lead for good, and LeBron James had 13 for the Heat, who improved to 6-1 in home games this season.
Mike Scott had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Hawks, while Al Horford and Pero Antic added 12 points each in Atlanta’s 14th loss in its past 16 games against Miami.
Atlanta’s Kyle Korver made three 3-pointers, extending his streak to 84 consecutive games with at least one made from beyond the arc, five shy of matching Dana Barros’ NBA record.
The Heat (8-3) moved two games in front of the Hawks (6-5) atop the Southeast division. Miami will next face the Orlando Magic in games today and on Saturday while Atlanta will face the Detroit Pistons today and on Friday.
Elsewhere in the NBA, it was: Rockets 109, Celtics 85; Wizards 104, Timberwolves 100; Pistons 92, Knicks 86; and Kings 107, Suns 104.
In Houston, Terrence Jones scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Rockets over Boston for their third straight victory.
Jones was 10 of 12 from the field as the Rockets shot 57 percent as a team, including 72 percent in the first half in building a 24-point halftime lead.
Patrick Beverley chipped in 16 points, James Harden added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Dwight Howard had 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Rockets raced out to a 17-point, first-quarter lead and were never threatened.
Courtney Lee had 17 points, Avery Bradley added 11 and Jared Sullinger had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Boston, which lost its fourth in a row.
Meanwhile, Memphis Grizzlies guard Tony Allen was suspended for one game without pay by the NBA on Tuesday for kicking Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers in the face during a game.
Allen, who is averaging 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game, will miss today’s game when the Grizzlies visit the Golden State Warriors.
The incident, for which Allen was assessed a flagrant foul and ejected, came with 1:51 left in Monday’s first quarter of the 106-102 victory over the Clippers.
On the play, Allen jumped and stretched up his left leg to prevent Paul from driving the lane for an easy layup. Instead, Paul was struck just under his nose with a hard blow by Allen’s shin.
The Grizzlies are off to a 6-5 start, are ninth in the Western Conference and fourth in the Southwest division, 3 1/2 games behind the pace-setters in both, the San Antonio Spurs.
