Hornets through as Rockets flop
THE New Orleans Hornets booked a playoff spot and snuffed out the post-season hopes of the Houston Rockets with a 101-93 road win on Wednesday.
"It's a good feeling knowing we're in," Hornets guard Chris Paul told reporters. "But now it's about staying in."
Houston's Kevin Martin and Kyle Lowry were on fire from long-range, in the first quarter, connecting on five of eight three-point attempts as the Rockets burst to a 38-21 lead.
But the Rocket scored just 33 points in the next two quarters, allowing the Hornets to claw their way back into the game.
"In the first quarter we looked like the Bad News Bears," said Paul. "In the last three quarters we showed up."
The teams exchanged the lead six times in the fourth before New Orleans seized command of the game on two free throws by Paul, who led the Hornets with 28 points, with 4:16 remaining.
Free throws
Trevor Ariza followed the free throws with a dunk after a steal and New Orleans iced the game from the free throw line to silence the home crowd.
Martin led the Rockets with 21 points and Luis Scola and Goran Dragic added 16 points each.
In Miami, John Salmons scored 17 points, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute added 14 points and 12 rebounds as the already-eliminated Milwaukee Bucks beat the Miami Heat 90-85.
The loss knocked Miami (54-24) a half-game back of Boston in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Carlos Delfino's 3-pointer with 24 seconds left helped seal it for the Bucks, who got 14 points from Corey Maggette. Milwaukee was eliminated from playoff contention during the game, thanks to Indiana's win over Washington.
LeBron James scored 29 points for Miami, which played without injured guard Dwyane Wade, the NBA's No. 3 scorer.
In Oklahoma City, Kevin Durant scored 29 points and Russell Westbrook added 26 as Oklahoma City clinched the Northwest Division title with a 112-108 win over the Clippers.
In Indianapolis, Danny Granger scored 25 points as Indiana clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2006 with a 136-112 win over the Wizards.
Elsewhere, it was: Warriors 95, Lakers 87; Nuggets 104, Mavericks 96; Magic 111, Bobcats 102; Knicks 97, 76ers 92; Spurs 124, Kings 92; Cavaliers 104, Raptors 96; Pistons 116, Nets 109; and Suns 108, Timberwolves 98.
