Howard powers Magic to victory

THE Orlando Magic rebounded from a disappointing loss to Detroit on Monday to beat Indiana 111-96 on Wednesday in Indianapolis, handing the Pacers a season-worst sixth successive loss.

Dwight Howard recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds to help the Magic (30-16) erase the memory of Monday's 103-96 loss to the struggling Detroit Pistons.

"We had to play inside out, and that's when we have a lot of success," Howard said after his teammates supported him with outside shooting.

Jason Richardson added 19 points and nine rebounds as Orlando moved ahead of Atlanta (29-17), which lost 98-90 to the Milwaukee Bucks, for sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando outscored the Pacers 38-27 in the second quarter to seize control, stretched its lead to 21 in the third and were never threatened after that.

Danny Granger scored a game-high 27 points for Indiana (16-26) despite a poor shooting night. He made just 6 of 19 shots, but was 12-for-13 at the free throw line.

"They made 16 (threes). It's hard to win when a team shoots (16 of 34) from the three-point line," Granger said.

The Pacers are now 10 games below .500 having lost 16 of their past 21 games.

The Orlando Magic had earlier announced they had waived reserve point guard Jason Williams.

Elsewhere in the NBA, it was: Nets 93, Grizzlies 88; Sixers 107, Raptors 94; Nuggets 109, Pistons 100; Bucks 98, Hawks 90; Thunder 118, Timberwolves 111 (OT); Rockets 96, Clippers 83; Bobcats 114, Suns 107; Spurs 112, Jazz 105; and Hornets 112, Warriors 103.

In Minnesota, Kevin Durant scored 47 points, matching the season's highest tally, and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 118-117 overtime victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The NBA's leading scorer tied Los Angeles Clipper Blake Griffin's performance for the most points in a game this season to win his personal battle with Minnesota forward Kevin Love in the road win.

Durant made a step-back, game-winning jump shot with 28 seconds left in overtime and the Thunder (29-16) overcame Love's own big game of 31 points and 21 rebounds.

"It was a fun game to be a part of," Durant said after tying his career-high points haul.

"Both teams made plays. My teammates did a great job of getting me the ball in spots to score, and I was able to make some (shots)," he added.

The Timberwolves (10-35) had a chance to tie the game with seven seconds remaining in the extra session but Corey Brewer missed the second of two free throws.
