James' late surge helps Cavaliers past Heat
LEBRON James made two free throws with four seconds remaining to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 92-91 win over the Miami Heat and win his personal duel with Dwyane Wade on Monday.
James scored 32 points, including the last couple at the line to give his Eastern Conference-leading team the edge in the final seconds, while Wade missed a 25-footer at the buzzer.
"It came down to one possession," James, who was knocked into the crowd when fouled on his final attempt, told reporters.
"I've got a headache. I just had to relax, I didn't want to rush it. It was difficult, I was able to get up and knock them down."
Wade matched his friend's total of 32 points but scored just two in the second half, missed two free throws with 41 seconds to play and was responsible for a costly turnover six seconds from the end when Miami was leading 91-90.
Shaquille O'Neal stepped up with 19 points for the Cavaliers (35-11), who won their fifth straight and third without second leading scorer Mo Williams, who has a shoulder injury.
The Heat (23-21) took an early advantage and led by 11 in the third before Cleveland reined them in towards the end of the quarter.
Cleveland sharpshooter Daniel Gibson made two big three-pointers in the last quarter and had 15 in total while James scored all six of his fourth-quarter points at the free throw line.
Teammates on the 2008 Olympic squad as well as fellow draftees in 2003, James and Wade put on a one-on-one showcase in the first half.
Wade opened with 13 points in the first and added 17 in the second but reigning league MVP James topped him with 20 - a stretch including dunks and long jump shots.
"That was probably the most amazing thing I've seen in my life," said Miami forward Michael Beasley.
By winning their latest matchup, James has now taken 12 of the 21 meetings between the two players.
In Boston, Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Rajon Rondo had 16 points and 12 assists to lead the Celtics to a 95-89 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on a TD Garden floor that had to be continually wiped because of condensation.
Boston forward Kevin Garnett played his second straight after missing 10 consecutive games with a hyperextended right knee. He finished with 17 points in 30 minutes.
Rasual Butler led the Clippers with 17 points.
The slippery parquet floor forced ball boys to mop one end while play was going on at the other for most of the game. Early in the game, it appeared a few players slipped, causing a brief delay with 2:28 left in the first quarter.
In Philadelphia, Danny Granger scored 26 points and Dahntay Jones had 18 points as the Indiana Pacers earned a split of the home-and-away series with a 109-98 romp over the 76ers.
Jones scored seven straight points late in the fourth quarter that helped the Pacers put this one away and improve to 6-18 on the road.
Elsewhere, it was: Grizzlies 99, Magic 94; Hawks 102, Rockets 95; Bulls 98, Spurs 93; Jazz 124, Suns 115; Nuggets 104, Bobcats 93; and Hornets 98, Trail Blazers 97.
