Kerr spurns Knicks for Warriors’ post

STEVE Kerr has spurned an offer from the New York Knicks to join the Golden State Warriors as head coach, agreeing to a five-year, US$25 million deal, the National Basketball Association said on its website.

Kerr has never been a head coach but will give up his broadcasting career to replace Mark Jackson, who was fired earlier this month despite playoff appearances in the last two seasons.

The five-time National Basketball Association title winner was in talks to join his former coach Phil Jackson at the Knicks but instead decided to take up the California-based option, closer to his San Diego home. “They have a good young team. The location is ideal,” Kerr told the website. “My daughter goes to Cal and plays volleyball. My oldest son is in college in San Diego and our youngest is a junior in high school.”

He won three titles under Jackson in Chicago and another two under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. He was also general manager of the Phoenix Suns for three seasons.

Meanwhile, Miami and San Antonio both advanced to the conference finals in contrasting fashion on Wednesday, with the Heat storming over the top of Brooklyn to pinch a narrow victory while the Spurs cruised past the Portland Trail Blazers.

Miami trailed almost the entire game but found a way to pull out a 96-94 win that clinched a 4-1 series victory and a place in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth-straight year.

San Antonio did not require any such dramatics, who again won comfortably against Portland, with the 104-82 victory also clinching a 4-1 win.
