Knicks land Stoudemire in free agent splash
THE New York Knicks have landed one of the NBA's big-name free agents Amare Stoudemire, the All-Star forward said yesterday.
"The Knicks are back," Stoudemire told reporters in New York in a video posted on the NBA's website (nba.com).
"It feels great to be a part of a beautiful organisation. I'm looking forward to building something special here."
The five-year deal, which remains in-principle until July 8, would be worth $99.7 million, according to the New York Times.
The 27-year-old five-time All-Star averaged 23.1 points and 8.9 rebounds last season to lead the Phoenix Suns into the Western Conference Finals.
The Knicks are among a raft of teams bidding in one of the richest free-agent pools in the history of the NBA and are seen to have the financial clout to sign another headlining player.
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and scores of other top players hit the open market on July 1, setting off a frenzy of speculation and bidding wars.
With James, Wade and Bosh biding their time, the Knicks, who last saw postseason action in 2004, have swooped on a big man they hope can turn their fortunes around.
