Knicks sign Russian center Mozgov to contract

THE New York Knicks signed Russian center Timofey Mozgov to a contract, the team said yesterday in the midst of a busy week of acquisitions.

The seven-foot-one (2.16m), 250 lbs (113 kg) Mozgov, who turns 24 this month, averaged 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 19 minutes a game with BC Khimki in Russia last season, the Knicks said in a statement.

The center from St. Petersburg also averaged 11 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 23 minutes per game for the Russian National Team at the 2009 European championships.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Knicks, who had hoped to lure LeBron James to New York, have been busy since losing out on the dynamic forward last week when he decided to play for the Miami Heat.

On Monday, they signed free agent guard Raymond Felton. Felton, the fifth player taken in the 2005 NBA Draft out of North Carolina, averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 assists in his five seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats.

New York's first signing of the free agent season was forward Amar'e Stoudemire, a five-times All Star with Phoenix.
