Liu shines, Sharks end losing streak with a win over Fujian

THE Shanghai Sharks finally tasted victory, beating visiting Fujian Sturgeons 91-85 in the Chinese Basketball Association league match in front of home crowd yesterday.

Shanghai captain Liu Wei stood out again, notching a game-high 30 points and 6 assists, making up for the sloppy Gilbert Arenas, who scored 7 points and 3 assists coming off the bench.

Arenas was also hauled up for five fouls during his 24 minutes on the court.

Before the win yesterday, the Sharks were under huge pressure after accumulating nine losses - six straight - in their 11 games so far this season.

"It's great to get a win," said a relieved Daniel Panaggio, Sharks' head coach, who added that he "got a little emotional in this game."

"I'm proud of the Chinese players," the coach added.

The Sharks had a dream start, racing off to a 30-15 lead in the first quarter and holding fort at 73-61 by the third quarter.

Shark's center Max Zhang (Zhang Zhaoxu) attacked the paint hard, scoring 16 points and several dunks and lifting the gloom prior to the game.

But Fujian roared back to narrow the difference to just 3 points with three minutes to go before the home side held off the late rally by the visitors.

Liu's three-pointers and a free-throw sealed the game.

Arenas, who has yet to make a complete recovery from a thigh muscle strain, sat on the bench at the beginning of the third quarter, receiving massage from his team doctor.

"Arenas still needs to grind in with the team after missing the past games," said Max Zhang. "He has very high basketball IQ and will deliver great passes."

Shanghai will welcome Foshan Long Lions on Sunday.

In other CBA games yesterday, Tracy McGrady's Qingdao Doublestar lost 107-126 to Shanxi Fenjiu to extend their losing streak to 11. McGrady could only play for three minutes after suffering from a bout of diarrhea.

Defending champion Beijing Ducks, led by Stephon Marbury, beat Zhejiang Chouzhou 112-93 while Liaoning Jiebao overcame Dongguan Leopards 108-93 at home yesterday.
