Marbury denied MVP in finals for not being Chinese

STEPHON Marbury should not be granted the MVP for the finals of the Chinese Basketball Association league although his Beijing Ducks are only one win away from their first championship title.

The reason is because the 35-year-old guard is not Chinese, basketball officials confirmed today.

According to the regulations of the CBA league, MVP should only be granted to the best local players from the championship team. This means Marbury, the best player and the spiritual leader of the Ducks, who contributed an average of 32 points and six assists in the previous four games in the best-of-seven finals, will not have the honor.

"It's written on our league's manual and won't be changed for a single player," said Bai Xilin, a director of the association. "If the public have some better ideas, we welcome them to propose and we can discuss them in future."

According to the CBA's regulations, MVP of the finals should be elected among the top three Chinese players of the winning team depending on their average scores.

So far Beijing's 19-year-old forward Zhai Xiaochuan is leading all the Chinese players with 11.25 points on average. The following is the Taiwanese point guard Lee Hsueh-Lin with an average of 9.85 points.

The Beijing Ducks are leading 3-1 against the defending champion the Guangdong South China Tigers after a 107-98 win at home last night. The next game is scheduled for tomorrow night in Beijing. If the Ducks can defend their home court again, they will win the CBA championship for the first time.
