Marbury rallies Ducks as Sharks fall short again

DEFENDING champions Beijing Ducks extended the Shanghai Sharks woeful run with a 101-88 away win with Beijing's Stephon Marbury rallying the visitors in their CBA game yesterday.

Marbury, who scored a game-high 38 points and had four assists, brought the Ducks back into the game after falling behind 40-47 in the first half.

The Sharks are 4-13 half way in the season, just above the bottom-placed Qingdao Eagles in the 17-team CBA league. With yesterday's win, Beijing (14-3) sits on top of the table.

For Sharks, their captain Liu Wei missed another game while Gilbert Arenas is in the US for treatment.

A dejected Shark's coach Daniel Panaggio could only say: "I am proud of my players" - a line he repeats after every game - win or lose.

"They played hard, we had an excellent defense in the first half," said the American coach. The players were "worn down a little bit in the second half and they lacked the fire power."

The Sharks started incredibly well, putting the visitors on the back foot early on, but were unable to resist Marbury's flawless display as the Ducks turned the tables in the fourth.

Beijing's two foreign players, Marbury and Randolph Morris, were both on the court in the fourth. Morris scored 21 points.

Sealed the game

Marbury's three big three-pointers eventually sealed the game.

D.J. White led the Sharks challenge, nailing a team-high 33 points and seven rebounds. "We have not given up, that's most important," said White, speaking with his head down most of the time at the post-match conference.

Elsewhere in the CBA, Liaoning Jiebao beat Jilin Northern Tigers 100-96 at home, Zhejiang Golden Bulls topped Zhejiang Lions 103-91, Dongguan Leopards upstaged Shanxi Brave Dragons 122-102, Tianjin Golden Lions lost 89-98 to Bayi Rockets, Guangdong Southern Tigers came up tops against Xinjiang Flying Tigers 102-98, Foshan Long Lions lost to Shandong Lions 87-104 and Tracy McGrady's Qingdao Eagles again lost to Fujian Sturgeons 94-104.
