Miami鈥檚 James on fire in return to Cleveland as Heat burn Cavs
LEBRON James was unstoppable in his return to his former home, putting on a first-quarter shooting display that set the tone for Miami as the Heat beat the Cavaliers 100-96 on Tuesday.
James stormed out of the gate in his sixth contest back in Cleveland, scoring 25 of his 43 points in the opening quarter for the Heat at Quicken Loans Arena.
“I felt a good rhythm,” James said. “I shot the ball well in warm-ups and I was able to carry it over into the game.”
The 29-year-old tallied 16 points before missing a shot and drained his first four shots from beyond the arc.
He was 10-of-11 from the floor and knocked down five of his six tries from three-point range in the first quarter.
James finished with 31 points in the first half and 14-of-19 from the field for the game to go with six rebounds and four assists for Miami, which has won two in a row after a 1-5 tailspin.
Chris Bosh had 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter in the triumph.
Dion Waiters finished with 17 points and 11 assists for the Cavaliers, who were playing their first game without star Kyrie Irving. Cleveland has dropped six of its last eight games.
All-Star game MVP Irving will miss at least two weeks with a left bicep injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Miami has won all three contests this season with Cleveland and is 13-1 against the Cavaliers since James left for south Florida in the summer of 2010.
“I thought our defense was pretty good, played it the right way,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “They just made shots down the stretch.”
The Cavaliers made the Heat work for the victory as the game was tied 79-79 at the end of the third and 88-88 with 3:43 left in the fourth.
Bosh drained a three-pointer to put Miami up 93-88. Anderson Varejao then made a layup for Cleveland, but James hit two foul shots to make it 95-90 with just over a minute remaining.
Elsewhere in the NBA, it was: Hawks 118, Raptors 113 (in overtime); Trail Blazers 120, Bucks 115 (OT); Kings 117, Wizards 111 (OT); and Warriors 103, Magic 89.
