Nowitzki hints at 2017 retirement

NATIONAL Basketball Association star Dirk Nowitzki says he could retire as early as next year, but admits his dream is to play until 2018 and celebrate 20 years with the Dallas Mavericks.

Nowitzki has played for the Mavericks since joining from DJK Wurzburg in 1998.

The German was the NBA finals’ MVP during the team’s 2011 championship year and is a 13-time NBA All-Star, but at 38-year-old is coming to the end of his career.

“If things don’t go so well and it hurts everywhere, it could be that 2017 will be the end,” the forward told German magazine Sport Bild.

“Actually, my plan is to complete the 20 years and play for Dallas until 2018.

“But just because I have signed a two-year contract doesn’t automatically mean that I will play for two years. It could happen next year.”

Nowitzki is currently struggling with a persistent Achilles tendon problem, has not played since November 25 and says he wants to speak to Mavericks’ bosses next summer about his future.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks are patiently waiting for Nowitzki to return having only played five matches of the 24 games in the current NBA season.

Dallas beat Denver Nuggets 112-92 on Monday, but remain bottom of the Southwest Division with 6-18 record.

On Tuesday, Stephen Curry scored 30 points to win his duel with Anthony Davis as the Golden State Warriors dug deep to defeat the New Orleans Pelicans 113-109.

Reigning NBA MVP Curry’s haul included five three-pointers as well as four rebounds and seven assists to boost the Warriors to 22-4 for the season.

Davis, second only to Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook in the points scoring charts this season, averaging just over 30 per game, scored 28 points in the Pelicans’ losing effort.

Davis also pulled down eight rebounds and produced three assists but ultimately the Warriors had too much firepower for the home team.

Kevin Durant added 27 points for the Dubs while Klay Thompson finished with 17 and Draymond Green made his first triple double of the season — 12 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, it was: Cavaliers 103, Grizzlies 86; Magic 131, Hawks 120; Timberwolves 99, Bulls 94; Suns 113, Knicks 111 (in overtime); and Trail Blazers 114, Thunder 95.
