Nuggets work well to cool Heat

THE Denver Nuggets thrashed the Miami Heat 114-96 on Thursday, in a game where a match-up of two of the National Basketball Association's top scorers took a back seat to the efficient offense of the home team.

Carmelo Anthony had 22 points to lead six Nuggets into double figures as Denver had little trouble offsetting a 25-point haul from Miami guard Dwyane Wade.

The Northwest division-leading Nuggets (14-5) built a 58-42 halftime advantage and sealed the win with a dominant third quarter, where their lead extended to as many as 25 points.

Elsewhere, it was: Celtics 90, Spurs 83; and Rockets 111, Warriors 109.

In Denver, Arron Afflalo had 17 points and J R Smith added 16 off the bench as Denver avenged an 88-96 loss to Miami on November 6.

The Nuggets' team effort helped compensate for Anthony's 6-for-17 shooting. The NBA's leading scorer, Anthony has scored at least 20 points in every game this season, the only player in the league to accomplish the feat.

Forward Michael Beasley had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Heat (10-8) who have lost three of their last four.

"It's no secret what they were doing -- sending two guys at me," Wade said. "I want us to capitalize (when they double team) because I'm a willing passer. My teammates have to do a better job of getting me open."

Sixth straight

In San Antonio, Texas, the Boston Celtics won their sixth straight game with victory over the Spurs.

Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and Ray Allen added 15 as the Celtics improved to an NBA-best 8-1 away from home and moved back into a share of the Eastern Conference lead with Orlando.

San Antonio also had won five in a row coming in, but the Celtics ran away with what Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged was a litmus test. Of the nine teams San Antonio has beaten this season, only four had winning records.

Spurs rookie DeJuan Blair had a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds.

In Oakland, California, Aaron Brooks hit two free throws with 2 seconds left as Houston edged Golden State.

Brooks finished with 25 points to lead seven Houston players in double figures.

Monta Ellis had 24 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Golden State, which welcomed back coach Don Nelson after he missed five games because of pneumonia.
