Pacers stifle the Wizards
Indiana widened its lead atop the NBA’s Eastern Conference with a powerful defensive performance to rout Washington 93-66 on Friday while nearest rival Miami suffered another Big Apple defeat, being beaten by Brooklyn in double overtime 104-95.
Among the day’s other games, Kyle Korver’s late free throws steered Atlanta past Houston 83-80, and the Clippers recorded their biggest-ever win, 123-87, over the Lakers in the clash of Los Angeles rivals. Stephen Curry’s late basket lifted Golden State over Boston 99-97.
Indiana’s David West scored 20 points and C.J. Watson had 16 for the league-leading Pacers, who used an 11-3 run in the third quarter to draw clear of Washington.
The Wizards, who had won their previous three road games, faced an uphill task against Indiana where they have not won in seven years and were not helped by poor shooting from the foul line, going 9 of 23 on free throws.
Bradley Beal scored 17 points to lead Washington, which has lost 11 of 12 against the Pacers.
Atlanta’s Kyle Korver scored 20 points, including four free throws in the final 16 seconds, to enable the Hawks to hold on for an 83-80 win over fast-finishing Houston.
Paul Millsap also had 20 points for the Hawks, fell behind 76-73 before Korver’s 3-pointer tied the game. DeMarre Carroll’s 3 soon after gave Atlanta a one-point lead which held.
James Harden had 25 points to lead the Rockets, who had scored 11 unanswered points to take that final-quarter lead.
Brooklyn’s Joe Johnson scored 32 points as the rejuvenated Nets beat Miami 104-95 for their fifth-straight win.
LeBron James had 36 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Heat, but fouled out in the first overtime.
Elsewhere, it was: Grizzlies 104, Suns 99; Mavericks 107, Pelicans 90; Timberwolves 119, Bobcats 92; Pistons 114, 76ers 104; Cavaliers 113, Jazz 102; Bulls 81, Bucks 72; and Kings 103, Magic 83.
