Panaggio named as new coach of Sharks

THE Shanghai Sharks have turned to another American coach to boost their title chances in the new Chinese Basketball Association league this year.

Daniel Panaggio, former assistant coach of the NBA side Portland Trail Blazers, has been named as the new head coach of the Sharks for the coming 2011-2012 season, the club announced on their website yesterday.

The Sharks, in which Yao Ming is a major investor, have been looking for a coach ever since their former American head coach Bob Donewald Jr. left to join the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in June this year.

Donewald took the Sharks to the semifinals in the 2009-2010 season but could only finish in the 12th place last season.

"With the development of the team, we needed an experienced coach to take the team further," said Zhang Mingji, the general manager of the Sharks.

"We are aware of Panaggio's good reputation as a coach in the United States."

The Sharks are currently training in Australia and Panaggio will join the team soon, Zhang said.

The new CBA season opens in November.

Panaggio most recently served as one of the scouts for another NBA side the Phoenix Suns. The 56-year-old American was the head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders - the minor league team of the Los Angeles Lakers - from 2006 to 2010 when Sun Yue, China's national team player, was with them.

Panaggio was an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers for four seasons from 2000 to 2004.
