Panaggio resigns as coach of Sharks

AMERICAN Daniel Panaggio stepped down as the head coach of the Shanghai Sharks to become the team's senior consultant, the basketball club announced yesterday.
The announcement came one day after the Sharks lost to the Beijing Ducks.
Wang Qun, a Shanghai native who was an assistant coach with the Sharks when they won their only China Basketball Association championship in 2002, was named acting head coach, the club said.
The Sharks are 4-13 halfway through the season and are just above the last-place Qingdao Eagles in the 17-team CBA.
"I hope you keep working to prove yourselves on the court," said Panaggio, who became the Sharks head coach last season, guiding them to a sixth-place finish in the CBA.
Panaggio was an assistant coach for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers from 2006 to 2010 and supervised player scouting for the Phoenix Suns before being hired by the Sharks.
"We are very grateful for Panaggio's efforts in the past two years," said Sharks general manager Zhang Mingji.
Wang said the team will continue to employ the defensive and offensive systems set by Panaggio.
However, the team faces a difficult task in the next few games as the back court duo of Liu Wei and Gilbert Arenas are both out with injuries.
Wang gets his first test today as the Sharks battle the Tianjin Gold Lions in Shanghai.
"The team needs better unity and spirit to get back on track," Wang said.
