Phoenix signs Turkoglu, Childress
THE Phoenix Suns have acquired Turkish forward Hedo Turkoglu in a trade that sends Brazilian guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Dwayne Jones to the Toronto Raptors.
The deal gives the Suns a third forward in their attempt to replace free agent Amare Stoudemire. Phoenix signed swingman Josh Childress in a sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks earlier on Wednesday and picked up Hakim Warrick in similar swap with the Chicago Bulls.
Turkoglu spent one disappointing season in Toronto, averaging 11.3 points after being named the National Basketball Association's most improved player with the Orlando Magic the year before.
Barbosa, the NBA's 2006-07 sixth man of the year, played seven seasons in Phoenix, averaging 12.6 points as a key sub. Jones spent most of last season in the NBA Developmental League.
Atlanta will get the Suns' 2012 second-round draft pick as part of the Childress deal.
Childress has played the past two seasons in Greece. The 27-year-old previously spent four years with the Hawks.
The former Stanford player signed a five-year contract with the Suns.
Elsewhere, the Philadelphia 76ers have signed Evan Turner, the second overall selection in the NBA draft, team president Ed Stefanski said.
Turner averaged 20.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists while leading Ohio State University into the round of 16 in the NCAA collegiate tournament.
