Playoff spot sealed, Sharks fall in Beijing

IN their penultimate game of the regular season, the Shanghai Sharks fell to a 78-93 away defeat to the Beijing Ducks.

The visitors played well and the scoreboard didn't reflect the closeness of the game, which was hard fought by both sides from start to finish.

Looking for a win to maintain their push for a high playoff spot, the Sharks' game-plan quickly went out of the window when Beijing's Ji Zhe drilled home a succession of three-pointers early on in the match as the Ducks outscored the visitors 38-22 in a pulsating first quarter in Beijing.

Shanghai was the stronger side before the buzzer sounded for halftime and Mike Harris and Meng Lingyuan were at the forefront of the Sharks' efforts to get back into the game.

Beijing, looking less confident without its mercurial point guard Stephon Marbury, lacked its initial swagger and ruthlessness and this was capitalized on by the Sharks, who knew they had to score quickly to get back in contention.

The visitors continued to aggressively chase the game but the Ducks, now with Marbury back on court and linking up well with Randolph Morris, were starting to pull Shanghai's defense one way and then the other.

Harris and Marcus Landry continued to be effective outlets for the Sharks but for every shot Shanghai made, Marbury would take the ball down the other end of the court and get it to Morris or Ji for the Ducks to score themselves.

All of this eventually became too much for the tiring Sharks who gradually ran out of steam, and the game drifted away from them.

This allowed Beijing to hold off their rivals' increasingly desperate efforts and eventually ease over the finishing line.

For Beijing, Morris scored a game-high 24 points whilst Ji got 20 and Marbury made 13. In reply, Landry picked up 18 points while Harris got 15 for a Shanghai side that will now travel to Tianjin for its last game before the Chinese Basketball Association All-Star break.

In other results from around the CBA last night, the Guangdong Tigers had their 13-game winning streak ended after losing on the road, 121-128, to the Shanxi Dragons, while the Guangsha Lions suffered an embarrassing 107-110 defeat to the league's bottom side, the Jiangsu Dragons in Nanjing.
