Qingdao ends long wait for first win

IT seemed a never-ending wait but Tracy McGrady delivered some festive cheer to Qingdao's fans, helping end the Doublestar's 12-game losing streak at home yesterday.

On the day the club marked its ninth anniversary, McGrady smashed in 24 points and eight rebounds for a 106-97 win over the visiting Jiangsu Dragons to snatch its first victory of the CBA season.

Adding to the joyous spirit, McGrady also played down fears that he was about to quit the team because of the performances.

"Fans: I'm not leaving qingdao," he wrote on his Weibo microblog. "It doesn't matter if we lose every game I'm gonna fight until the end. Those are false media reports. If it isn't a quote by me don't believe anything you read in the media here! These guys trying to create a story that's not there!"

Qingdao led all the way although the two teams were tied briefly in the third quarter.

McGrady's each dunk, alley-oops and three-pointers brought the half-filled stadium on to their feet.

Jiangsu's Mike Harri scored a game-high 37 points in his team's defeat yesterday.

At the end of the game, McGrady smashed the ball hard onto the court and was immediately surrounded by the media.

He cut a cake to mark the team's anniversary to set off a party atmosphere among the previously troubled fans.
