Rampant Ducks one win away from first CBA title
THE Beijing Ducks are just one victory away from their maiden Chinese Basketball Association title after securing a 107-98 victory over defending champions Guangdong Southern Tigers in Game 4 of the CBA finals in Beijing last night.
The victory gave the Ducks a commanding 3-1 lead in the seven-game series with Game 5 set for tomorrow.
Beijing's Randolph Morris and Stephon Marbury combined to score 60 points as the Ducks, in their first CBA finals, rallied in the second quarter.
"To be honest we did not expect a swift 3-1 before the series began," Beijing head coach Min Lulei told reporters.
Marbury had 28 points and seven assists during his 35 minutes on court. The American's two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter helped the Ducks nail the game despite Guangdong's desperate offense.
The Tigers led 28-26 after the first quarter, but the Ducks used a 22-16 run in the second to stay ahead for good.
"The players did a great job on defense," Min said.
They also did well on offense.
Ducks center Morris scored a game-high 32 points and 12 rebounds. While Guangdong's starting center Su Wei got zero in his limited 4 minutes on court.
Su soon became an easy target for Beijing fans, who chanted, "Put Su on court," at the Guangdong bench.
Guangdong point guard Aaron Brooks led the team with 28 points and six assists. But he also had three turnovers.
Beijing's starting power forward Zhu Yanxi, who was taken to hospital after he clashed with Guangdong guard Chen Jianghua, reassured fans that he "felt good" after medical treatment.
"I will be back on Friday," said Zhu, who grabbed five points and two rebounds.
Guangdong, which has won seven titles in the 17-year league, will have to win three games in a row to deny Beijing but coach Li Chunjiang remained defiant. "The finals are not over yet," he said.
