Rockets’ Howard grounded for a month with sore knee

DWIGHT Howard, a key reason why the Houston Rockets own the fourth-best record in the National Basketball Association, will be sidelined for at least the next month, the team said on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old center has received a bone marrow aspirate injection in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, although an exact timetable for his return was not given by the club.

Howard is averaging 16.3 points, a team-high 11.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots a game for the Rockets, who are 33-15 and three games behind Memphis in the Southwest division.

Atlanta and Golden State are the only other NBA teams with better records than the Rockets so far this season.

Howard, who has already started rehabilitation on the knee, has already missed 16 games this season for Houston, which has gone 11-5 in his absence.

He has not played since January 23, when he suffered a right ankle sprain against the Phoenix Suns.

Despite Howard’s absence, the Rockets were in their comfort zone on Wednesday as James Harden scored 27 points to lead them to a 101-90 victory over the Chicago Bulls in Houston.

Harden scored 15 points in the second quarter to help the Rockets build an unbeatable lead.

Chicago’s Derrick Rose scored 23 points, playing a 12th consecutive game for the first time in four years.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, it was: Pacers 114, Pistons 109; Nets 109, Raptors 93; Celtics 104, Nuggets 100; Thunder 102, Hornets 91; Bucks 113, Lakers 105 (in overtime); Timberwolves 102, Heat 101; Spurs 110, Magic 103; Grizzlies 100, Jazz 90; and Warriors 128, Mavericks 114.
