Rockets agree Scola terms, Celtics re-sign Pierce
A PERSON with knowledge of the deal says the Houston Rockets have agreed to terms with restricted free agent Luis Scola of Argentina.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not official and the team had not announced it.
Scola's agent, George Bass, did not immediately return a phone message. The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV reported that Scola agreed to a five-year deal worth US$47 million.
Re-signing Scola was Houston's top priority after the team matched Cleveland's offer sheet to retain point guard Kyle Lowry on Wednesday. Scola started all 82 games for the Rockets last season and averaged 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said after last season that owner Leslie Alexander would match any offers to keep Lowry and Scola.
The Rockets have been quiet on the free-agent front since Morey met with Chris Bosh moments after free agency began on July 1. Bosh joined LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami, while Morey turned his focus to new deals for Lowry and Scola.
Scola has been one of Houston's most consistent players since the Rockets acquired his draft rights from San Antonio before the 2007-08 season. He's started every game over the past two years and averaged 13.1 points and 7.9 rebounds in three seasons with Houston.
Elsewhere, the Boston Celtics have re-signed team captain and forward Paul Pierce and added former Miami Heat big man Jermaine O'Neal.
Pierce, 32, said he hoped the signings and others this summer would help the Celtics make another run at an NBA title that alluded them this year. The Celtics lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in game seven of the NBA finals.
"I'm thrilled that they (team officials) kept the core intact and look forward to getting back on the parquet with my teammates so we can bring Banner 18 home to Boston," Pierce said.
The 2008 NBA finals MVP is the Celtics' third all-time leading scorer with 19,899 points. He trails only Larry Bird and John Havlicek.
"Paul has been a cornerstone of our franchise for the last decade and we could not be more pleased that he is returning to the team," said Celtics president Danny Ainge.
Pierce averaged 18.3 points in making his eighth All-Star team.
O'Neal, 31, has spent 14 seasons in the NBA. He played in 70 games with the Heat last season, averaging 13.6 points.
"His talents are an excellent complement to our core roster," Ainge said.
