Rockets set to hire McHale as coach

THE Houston Rockets have reached an agreement in principle with Kevin McHale to bring the former Minnesota Timberwolves executive into coaching post, the Houston Chronicle reported yesterday.

The NBA club, which had searched for a month for Rick Adelman's replacement after a 43-39 season without a playoff berth, did not confirm the report immediately.

McHale spent 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics and helped them capture three NBA titles in the 1980s. The 53-year-old was twice named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year and averaged 17.9 points and 7.3 rebounds for his career.

He went 19-12 as an interim coach for Timberwolves at the end of the 2004-2005 season, before the NBA team's ownership asked him again to lead T-Wolves for the 2008-2009 campaign as he went 20-43 but was removed from the job after the season.

Last season, Yao has missed all but five games with a broken foot. If the 2.26-meter Chinese center returns to the NBA, he will have a former NBA star big man as his new coach.
