Rockets top Mavs in OT

THE Houston Rockets withstood a late rally by the Dallas Mavericks to outlast their Texas state rivals 116-108 in an overtime victory on Friday.

Point guard Aaron Brooks scored nine of his 25 points in the extra session and Kyle Lowry netted a career-high 26 to lead the Rockets (15-11) to their first win over the Mavericks in three attempts this season.

Dallas (19-8) lost top scorer Dirk Nowitzki in the second quarter after he collided with Houston forward Carl Landry in a play that sidelined both players.

Tim Thomas made a game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation as the Mavericks made up an 89-99 deficit with 3:05 to go in the fourth.

"The teams that have momentum normally win the overtime, but we did a great job of regrouping and playing through our mistakes," Brooks told reporters. "We were in a lull going into (overtime). For this team, it was great."

Elsewhere in the National Basketball Association, it was: Hawks 96, Jazz 83; Cavaliers 85, Bucks 82; Hornets 98, Nuggets 92; 76ers 98, Celtics 97; Thunder 109, Pistons 98; Knicks 95, Clippers 91; Grizzlies 107, Pacers 94; Timberwolves 112, Kings 96; Wizards 118, Warriors 109; and Raptors 118, Nets 95.

In Dallas, Jose Juan Barea had a team-high 23 points for the Mavericks but it was not enough to keep their five-game winning streak alive.

"When a big star like Dirk is out, we've got to step up and we didn't do a good job of that," Barea said.

After fighting valiantly to force overtime, the Mavericks were cold in the final minutes and went scoreless for a two-minute stretch as the Rockets seized the game.

Dallas missed the scoring touch of their German All Star Nowitzki, who needed stitches in his elbow after running into Landry on a drive with 9:28 left in the second.

The Rockets' player got the worst of the contact and was taken to an emergency room after breaking teeth.

Lowry's career night included 10 assists and five steals while Luis Scola added 19 points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

Shawn Marion and Josh Howard had 17 points apiece for the Mavericks.
