Shandong climbs to 3rd as Sharks falter again
THE Shanghai Sharks were swept away by the Shandong Gold 80-102 in their CBA game, giving the hosts their fourth straight win in the league.
Wang Qun could only watch as the Sharks struggled throughout the game in his second outing as the acting head coach since American Daniel Panaggio stepped down on Saturday.
The Sharks were 0-9 at the start of game and never recovered after that. Five Shandong players were in double figures with Jordanian Zaid Abbass notching a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds for the home side.
The Sharks only foreign player D.J. White contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Shanghai skipper Liu Wei managed 19 points.
Shandong is third in the league behind Guangdong and Beijing, while Shanghai - 5-14 since the start of the season - is second to last in the 17-team league.
Coach Wang said the team and players "face great pressure." "Blame me, not my players," said the Shanghai-born coach who was part of the team that won the only championship way back in 2002.
"They are good."
No finger pointing there but the team still needed to find a winning solution after Panaggio stepped down.
There is none as of now.
Wang insisted he would continue the system put in place by Panaggio with small adjustments.
American Gilbert Arenas is back home with an injury while Chang Tsung Hsien, a guard from Chinese Taipei, missed the game with contract problems.
"There are difficult games waiting for us ... it's an opportunity for young players," Liu Wei said. "Each and every one in the team must share the difficulties. We won't give up."
Elsewhere in the CBA, Stephon Marbury-led Beijing Ducks won 124-105 over the Liaoning Leopard with Marbury scoring 35 points and 7 assists.
