Sharks coached fired
SHANGHAI Sharks yesterday sacked head coach Ma Yuenan just two months into the CBA season and named assistant coach Liu Peng to take charge of the team.
“The club is grateful for Ma’s contribution to the team’s building and club’s development during his time as coach. However, due to disagreements, the club has decided to terminate the contract with Ma,” the Sharks said in a statement on their official website.
Veteran coach Ma took over from his predecessor Wang Qun last May when the club made changes in the managing board. The Sharks got off to a terrible start to the season, losing the first six games in a row. The team sacked American guard Delonte West and signed center Bernard James. It paid off as the team won 11 of the 16 games and is currently placed 12th in the 20-team CBA league. Liu, a 37-year-old Liaoning Province native, joined Shanghai Sharks in 1995. He retired after helping the Sharks win the 2002 CBA title, but returned to coach the Shanghai youth team.
