Sharks come up short against Bulls in OT
SHANGHAI lost to the Zhejiang Bulls in Yiwu after an agonizing overtime defeat that saw the home side's star player J.R. Smith lead them to a narrow 89-86 victory.
Though Shanghai held a slender advantage all the way up to the halftime break, the Bulls were always menacing, and the away side had to constantly be on their guard.
Shanghai's Zhang Zhaoxu was resolutely scooping up any rebounds that came his way while Peng Fei and Wang Yong chipped in with crucial three-pointers, but ultimately this was a game being decided by gritty defense. The sides went in at the break with Shanghai leading 41-39.
Zhejiang, which had forged a lead through deft shooting from Smith and Cao Fei, found its lead being eaten away via a late Sharks rally led by Ryan Forehan-Kelly.
With the game into its last minute, the Bulls missed several chances to put the game beyond doubt before cool shooting from the free-throw line by Zhang, and then Forehan-Kelly, forced the game into overtime with the score tied at 77-77.
Both sides traded baskets until a decisive fast break from the Bulls freed up space for Josh Boone to charge towards the rim and unleash a thunderous dunk that made the score 85-84.
The Sharks looked exhausted by then and although there was still time for the both sides to score more points, the momentum and lead stayed with the Bulls, who could finally celebrate victory when Mike Harris' desperate three-point attempt from long range clipped the rim and bounced away to safety as the Sharks left the court frustrated.
Forehan-Kelly stood out with a battling 24 points and 13 rebounds.
Smith, currently one of the league's most in-form players, scored 35 points and 11 rebounds.
Teammate Boone's 13 points and 12 rebounds also played a big part in helping the Bulls eventually dispatch their plucky guests.
